The Legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin

The legend tells of a Pied Piper who, in 1284, freed the town of Hameln from a plague of rats with his pipe-playing and, when he was denied the promised payment, in turn led the town's children away. To this day, this story shapes the townscape and identity of Hameln, which proudly calls itself the "Pied Piper Town".
